Guide

Retrofitting a cinema or automation into a finished Indian home usually means chiselling marble-clad walls, cutting false ceilings and repainting. Almost all of that is avoidable if the right conduits and boxes go in before plastering. This checklist is what we hand to architects and electrical contractors on villa projects across Hyderabad.

1. Fix the room before the wiring

Confirm the cinema room’s final dimensions, clear ceiling height after the false ceiling, door position and seating plan. Speaker positions depend on where heads will be, so the seating layout — including any riser — must be decided first.

  • Clear ceiling height of at least 9.5–10 ft for overhead Atmos speakers and a riser
  • Door away from the screen wall where possible
  • No windows on the screen wall; plan blackout for any others

2. Speaker back boxes and conduits

Every speaker location needs a back box or mounting point and a conduit to the equipment rack.

  • Screen wall: left, centre, right and subwoofer positions
  • Side and rear walls: surround and rear-surround positions at the planned height
  • Ceiling: Atmos positions in the false-ceiling plan, with access for back cans
  • Subwoofers: at least two candidate locations, as final placement is chosen by measurement
  • Use 25 mm conduit with draw wires; avoid sharp bends

3. Projector, screen and display

  • Projector position calculated from the chosen model’s throw distance and the screen width
  • Power, HDMI-rated conduit (32 mm or larger) and a network drop at the projector
  • Power and a trigger/control cable for motorized screens or masking
  • In living rooms: conduits behind the TV for HDMI, power and network, plus a route to the media unit

4. Equipment rack

  • Ventilated location, ideally outside or at the back of the cinema
  • Dedicated power circuit with surge protection and space for a UPS
  • Conduits from the rack to every speaker, the projector, the screen and the network
  • Fresh-air path or extraction for heat

5. Network (EDN) drops

  • One CAT6A drop per ceiling access point position on every floor
  • Two drops behind each TV and at the cinema rack
  • Drops for study desks, cameras and door stations
  • Conduit from the ISP entry point to the main rack

See whole-home villa Wi-Fi for access point planning.

6. Automation and curtains

  • KNX bus cable conduit to every keypad location, if you are choosing wired automation
  • Distribution board space for actuators, DALI gateways and power supplies
  • Power points at every curtain pelmet for motors
  • Neutral wires in switch boxes, and deep boxes, even if you plan wireless Zigbee

Not sure which system? Read wired KNX vs. wireless Zigbee.

7. Security

  • Conduit and power for gate and door video door phones
  • PoE drops for every CCTV camera position
  • Power and network for the security hub in a central location
  • Door preparation for smart digital locks (thickness and handing noted)

8. Acoustics and HVAC

  • Framing allowances for acoustic panels and bass traps
  • Low-velocity AC ducting and diffuser positions away from the main seats
  • Acoustic door with seals if isolation is a priority

9. Inspect before plastering

Walk the site with your contractor, check every box and conduit against the drawing, pull a draw wire through each run and photograph everything with a tape measure in frame. Those photos are invaluable years later.

Common follow-up questions

01 What size conduit should I use for home theater speaker cables?

For most speaker runs, a 25 mm conduit gives enough room to pull quality speaker cable and replace it later. For HDMI or multiple cables to a projector, use 32 mm or larger with gentle bends and pull-boxes on long runs.

02 Should speaker cables run in the same conduit as power cables?

No. Keep low-voltage AV, network and automation bus cables in their own conduits, separated from mains power, to avoid interference and to meet good electrical practice.

03 Can I install the cinema years after construction?

Yes, if the conduits, back boxes and draw wires are in place. That is the cheapest way to future-proof: lay the infrastructure now and install equipment when you are ready.
